What are the disadvantages of affiliate marketing?

Unless you carefully monitor the affiliates who run your programme and enforce any terms and conditions you have specified some unscrupulous affiliates may take advantage of your programme and start say bidding on the search terms that your website may rank well for (with good website search engine optimisation) and effectively steal your own traffic and then sell it back to you. For some affiliates, called domainers, this is their business model, and as long as you're happy with that then it is perfectly legitimate for them to do that.

Your advert may appear on websites where you'd prefer they didn’t, say those with gambling or adult content (although you can suffer this fate with click and impression advertising too).

You may make sales that are never actually completed due to affiliates or their associates initiating a purchase on your site but never then completing the deal in the hope that you won’t cross check and will still pay the referral commission even though you never actually made the sale.

Fortunately affiliates like this are few and far between and provided you can allocate resources to monitoring your programme this is rarely a large problem.
